Spanco Yarns Industrial Site

Client:

ISM Fastening Systems

Project Problem

This site, located in Lee County, was a former yarn dyeing and knitting facility. This site used algaecides to control algae growing in the plant’s air washing system which contained chlorinated hydrocarbons. The wash water was discharged through an on-site storm water system which exited the property into a wetland area. Monitor well installation and subsequent investigations found that the chlorinated hydrocarbons migrated vertically through the Triassic sediments and horizontally to the wetlands. The site has been acquired by ISM Fastening Systems of Herrin, Illinois to use as a distribution facility.

Solution

Ground water monitoring is currently being performed and the site is regulated by the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Division of Water Quality.
